Seismic retrofitting of these standard Caltrans columns required two layers of the FiberBond carbon system in the plastic hinge region & one layer over the rest of the column.
Prior to starting the workday the crew plans the day’s activities.
Using hand held grinders, the column surface is prepared. This removes dirt & contaminants and makes the surface more porous to allow the primer to penetrate deeper.
With hand held rollers, the primer is applied to the column.
The thin Carbon Fabric sheet is applied to the column.
Once applied, the FRP is monitored during the cure cycle to ensure a good repair.
The repaired column is allowed to cure overnight before coating.
