FIBER-BOND™ ON NON-DUCTILE CONNECTIONS

This test was conducted on a non ductile, full scale 16" x 16" column to beam connection. The lower reinforcing bars on the beam were terminated inside the column which was standard building practice a few years ago. The aim of the test was to increase ductility in the connection and transfer the load from the lower bars on one side to the lower bars on the other side with only external strengthening. The test was so successful that the upper (continuous) bars yielded before the lower ones!

The upper 25% of the beams where the steel clamps are visible were not reinforced to simulate the presence of a 4" deck. After surface preparation as per Edge Structural Composites specs, two layers of Fiber-Bond™ carbon was applied to the beams in the lateral direction. Two layers were applied as a stirrup around the bottom of the beams, and two layers were applied at +/- 60 degrees in the connection area. An additional 8" of the column was wrapped to prevent premature failure.

The control specimen failed at 2 degrees of drift and no load was transferred between the lower steel bars. The specimen retrofitted with Fiber-Bond™ carbon fiber was tested in increments of 1 degree and 3 cycles each way. The test was halted at an amazing 8 degrees of drift! The beams were still holding 50% of their original load.

This test clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of Fiber-Bond™ in reinforcing non ductile R/C building joints with little or no impact on the structure. The retrofit was completed by three workers in approx three hours.
